  • Finding a psychologist who is culturally competent is of utmost importance when it comes to dealing with mental health. There are certain nuances that must be taken into consideration when it comes to mental health. Otherwise, things can be made worse. Please also remember that this doesn’t mean you need to accept dysfunction. You absolutely should NOT. But there are different ways to go about dealing with family patterns that are unhealthy. Further to that, if you’re able to enforce explicit boundaries, decide to move out etc, then that’s great. This isn’t so say one is better than the other. Do what works for you and your family system.⚠️ Disclaimer: This can be true for other cultures & ethnicities too. • We cannot separate the importance of a sense of belonging from our physical and mental health. The social ties that accompany a sense of belonging are a protective factor helping manage stress and other behavioral issues. When we feel we have support and are not alone, we are more resilient, often coping more effectively with difficult times in our lives. Coping well with hardships decreases the physical and mental effects of these situations. How do we create a sense of belonging?💭- Creating a sense of belonging takes effort, to put yourself out there, seek out activities and groups of people with whom you have common interests, and engage with others.
- It might take time to gain acceptance, attention, and support from members of the group.
- Focus on the similarities, not the differences, that connects you to others, and remain open to new ways of thinking.
- Find ways in which you can separate your worth from your identity, through therapy. 🤎°°#consciouspsychology #psychologist #therapy #southafrica #relationships #psychology #heal #human #MentalHealth
