About Me
Why I became a psychologist?
I knew that I wanted to become a psychologist from the tender age of 7/8. I grew up in a small Indian community of Lenasia, where I experienced a great deal of family dysfunction and trauma, which led my parents to sending me to a child psychologist. She provided me a relationship where I didn’t feel alone and finally felt heard and understood. It was in those moments, that I realised I wanted to do what she did, and provide others with a space of healing, change and wholehearted care.
What Makes Me Different?
One of my good friends once told me, “Sanam, I love you because you are deep AND you bring me perspectives that I’ve never thought of before.” This resonates with me & I know these are two of my strengths that I carry with me through life & authentically hold in the therapy room. In our time together you’ll experience that depth—I will provide you with valuable insight. You will also experience a space where you feel deeply understood through my intricate understanding of culture based on my own lived realities.
Training
The enlightening, exciting and at times, challenging journey to become a Counselling Psychologist was actualised at the University of the Witwatersrand, where I graduated with a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology. My training at Wits provided a strong foundation in psychodynamic theory and practice. I am passionate about bringing positive change in the mental health sector in South Africa, through awareness and advocacy, specifically on social media platforms.
I also have a keen interest in psychometric assessment and became a registered Psychometrist before pursuing my Master’s degree. The decision to enter therapy is not often an easy one, specifically if you belong to a minority group and it may take copious amounts of courage. Thus, I have started Conscious Psychology in the hopes of changing the way we think about therapy and mental health. My role in the practice is solely to provide supervision to my psychologists and make a long-lasting impact through my practice.
